About CPPS

The Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society was formed in November, 2004 with the following 11 founding members in attendance: Jill Foster (Founder), David Butt,  Ed Dornell, Harry Holder, Sarah Pollock, Liz Roth, Pat Sanders, Linda Schimmel, Harriet Swanson, Milt Trask and Shirley Vogelsong. Since that time, the society has continued to grow and its members are dedicated to the following goals:

  • To promote fellowship among members

  • To raise public awareness of pastel as an artistic medium

  • To enhance creative painting with pastels

  • To offer educational activities that foster growth among members

Our current members reflect diverse levels of skill and experience. Some are beginners while others are accomplished professionals; some work exclusively with pastels while others work in mixed media, incorporating acrylic and watercolors; some work exclusively on their own while others attend regularly scheduled classes and workshops. Periodically, all members meet to share their work, their techniques, and to enjoy an afternoon of artistic fellowship.

How to Join

Membership dues are $30 per year for adults and $20 for high school and college students. Membership in the Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society (CPPS) offers the following benefits:

  • International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) affiliation

  • Opportunity to exhibit work in CPPS exhibitions

  • Invitation to attend four general meetings

  • Access to our online newsletter

  • Invitation to attend CPPS educational events, such as the National Artist workshop and member-led workshops

  • Invitation to attend Paint-Ins (winter) and Paint-Outs (summer)

  • Invitation to participate in Art Challenges and monthly online painting activities

There are four regularly scheduled meetings a year that cover society business, and are sometimes followed by an activity.  The meetings are on the second Sunday of the months of February, May, August, and November at 1:30 p.m. At the present time the meetings are being held at the Best Western Plus, Premiere Drive, State College, PA. In the months when no meeting is scheduled, the group may gather for informal critique sessions, paint outs and other art-related activities.
