Mike Beeman Workshop Recap

He gave us challenging exercises like the very last exercise, where we had to draw/paint from memory. We prepared our boards with two small sheets of paper, and selected a reference photo. He timed us, for five minutes we were to do nothing but stare at and study our photo. So we literally spent five minutes “seeing” our photo before doing anything else. Then we drew for five minutes from our memory only. We looked for another five minutes, then again worked from memory. On our second sheet of paper, we simply drew/painted for 20 minutes, then we compared the two; most of us like our first attempt better. Goodbye to Tom Nicholas

With bittersweet sadness, we had to say goodbye to CPPS member, Tom Nicholas. At the last meeting, CPPS announced that they will be giving a memorial scholarship to his daughter, Susan Nicholas Gephart, to support her event: the May 2016 Hameau Farm Studio Artist Retreat's Mentor Day. This scholarship will provide an artistic opportunity for three teens to attend Hameau to study alongside adult artists. Susan appreciates this wonderful gift.

Artist Spotlight: Marianne Fyda

Marrianne's painting, "Elements 5", has been accepted into the Pastel Society of America's upcoming show in New York City. The show, "Enduring Brillance", will run from September 8-26, 2015. We were told at the meeting that her last year's entry had won an award and had also been sold. Congratulations!

Artist Spotlight: Susan Nicholas Gephart

Susan will be teaching a one-day adult en plein air pastel and oil workshop at Millbrook Marsh on August 15, 2015. She will also be teaching at Hameau in October. Susan will be sharing supplies, such as pastels, that are provided by her national sponsors with the participants of her workshops. Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society April 26, 2015 meeting The quarterly meeting of the Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society was held on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Best Western Plus, Premiere Drive, State College, PA. In attendance were: Milt trask, Joan Engle, Judy Wilson, Debbie Decker, Jill Foster, Pamela Cistaro, Jennifer Shuey, Denise Wagner, Mary Rohrer-Dann, Kim Gates Flick, Anne Kenyon, Marianne Fyda and Pat McDannel. Plein Air Paint Out

Marianne and Pat will once again host the Plein Air Paint Out West on Friday, September 11 from 10-4 at Marianne's home in Troutville. They will also provide lunch, snacks, and drinks. Rain date is September 12. Some members have plans to paint with other groups. A Paint Out in the State College Area is being planned, but there is no information at this time.

Education Committee

The Education Committee's proposal was accepted by the members present and the committee will immediately begin implementing the 4 key features. The committee will be assuming responsibility for our major annual workshop/s featuring a nationally known artist and will work with Judy Leasure, our current workshop coordinator. so that the transition goes smoothly.

Birthday Party Committee

The committee asked for a budget for the event. The treasurer will put together a possible budget. Input was also asked for the types of favors and food and drink the members would prefer. If you have suggestions, please email Judy Wilson or Jen Shuey.

Mike Beeman Workshop Update

It was announced at the meeting that the Mike Beeman workshop is full. If you are interested in participating for only one day, please check with Judy Leasure (leasure.judy@gmail.com) to see if that possibility still exits.

"Pastel Expressions" Closing Activity

On August 20, CPPS president, Marianne Fyda, will give the closing demonstration and talk for the participants at the Al'Art Luncheon at SAMA Ligonier. Members of PPAL gave pastel demos at the June and July luncheons. The show will close on August 23. Pickup dates for artist work are August 25-27, 2015. Marianne announced at the meeting that Suzanne DeSarbo is willing to pick up paintings, but people need to email her to make arrangements beforehand. chrissue1@aol.com
