What made you choose pastels as a medium?

I love the intense coloring and the softened look it gives to my paintings.

How long have you been using pastels?

I started with pastels about 15 years ago. I had been using oils and acrylic, and I instantly fell in love with its vivid colors.

What are your favorite subjects to paint?

Actually, I paint everything except urban scenes and still life. I especially enjoy landscapes that afford me to use all styles and colors.

How has your practice changed over time?

I paint more hours since retiring. I am better at techniques, color choice, layout, and values.

What is the best art-related advice you’ve been given?

Keep practicing and never give up.

What do you wish you’d have known from the beginning, but took years to learn?

Values and color choices.

Where do you find inspiration?

Anytime I see a beautiful landscape, interesting face, or wildlife and pets.

When is your favorite time of day to create?

In the afternoon. I have less interruptions, especially from my nine cats.

How do you develop your art skills?

I study art books, take workshops, learn from meetings, and lots of practice.

How do you define success as an artist?

Well, selling a few paintings does help, but also getting satisfaction from the beautiful paintings I know I can create.
